A real method for measuring your portfolio’s progress towards net zero. Backed by climate science.

An initiative between UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures and Future Group

About

A science-aligned approach to net zero is a necessity. It is the only path to meeting the aims of the Paris Agreement and avoiding the worst effects of climate change.

RealZero Check was developed with climate researchers so that investors’ net zero commitments can be measured against science-aligned climate budgets.

RealZero Check is offered open source and free of charge.

The RealZero Check method takes a new approach to measuring progress towards net zero across an investment portfolio.

Backed by climate science
Considers the world’s carbon budgets required to limit warming to 1.5 degrees

Considers the emissions reduction trajectory needed to meet the Paris Agreement

Provides a sector-by-sector breakdown
Allows investors to measure their progress towards net zero
Provides transparency on net zero for regulators and consumers

Approach

This research was developed by the University of Technology, Sydney Institute for Sustainable Futures.

It is underpinned by the One Earth Climate Model (OECM), one of the most detailed climate and energy studies ever produced, which demonstrates a science-aligned path to meeting the Paris Agreement.

The same researchers that developed the OECM have helped create this open-source tool for investors to measure the progress of their portfolios towards net zero.

RealZero Check has been made open source and free to use through a partnership with Future Group.

01Tool

RealZero Check tool

A spreadsheet-based tool which allows you to view the alignment of a portfolio with the world’s carbon budgets and the emissions reduction trajectory required to meet the Paris Agreement.

02Report

RealZero Check report

Research explaining the issues with net zero commitments, the One Earth Climate Model and why net zero commitments from investors should consider carbon budgets.

In the past, net zero commitments from investors have presented several challenges.

Not always aligned to climate science or carbon budgets
Don’t consider the pace of decarbonisation needed to meet the Paris Agreement
Difficult to show transparent, measurable progress compared science-aligned reductions that are needed

Approach

RealZero Check is backed by the One Earth Climate Model (OECM), developed by the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures.

RealZeroCheck

About the OECM:

  • One of the most detailed peer-reviewed climate and energy studies ever produced
  • Illustrates the path to meeting the Paris Climate Agreement and limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C
  • Models the speed at which each sector needs to reduce emissions to meet the Paris Agreement
